Welcome To Fat Wreck Chords Review Week

Sadly, the headline does not mean that people from FAT will be writing reviews for Pastepunk (note to self: make this happen). However, I noticed last night that I have five new/excellent releases from the label that beckon for review, so I have decided to dedicate this week to those five releases. If reviews come together from other writers that are ready for publication, those will be added into the database as well.

SAY ANYTHING “…Is A Real Boy”

SAY ANTHING has faced a lot of criticism since the release of …Is A Real Boy. With all of the publicity about frontman Max Bemis’s problems with bad pot and psychological paranoia, it’s safe to say that SAY ANYTHING has been under the spotlight for some time now. Many fans of the band have found [...]

Masters of Horror Stream at pureVOLUME

This may be slightly old news, but you can stream the entire 30 song, 110 minute soundtrack to the new television series Masters of Horror at pureVOLUME. The double-disc set includes unreleased tunes from RISE AGAINST, NORMA JEAN, FEAR BEFORE THE MARCH OF FLAMES, ARMOR FOR SLEEP, ANDREW WK, IT DIES TODAY, and a slew of other bands. The CD version of the release also features some impressive multi-foldout packaging.

KINGSTON FALLS Signs to Strike First

From strikefirstrecords.com:

“”We are proud to announce the addition of another great new band to the Strike First roster – KINGSTON FALLS from Goshen, Indiana. They are currently promoting and playing shows on a self released 5 song CDep and they are writing for their debut Strike First full length which will be out in mid-2006. Check out the band on pureVOLUME and stay posted here for tour and news announcements.”"

- I haven’t reviewed the WAR OF AGES disc that Strike First released over the summer, but it definitely shouldn’t go unnoticed. If you liked the kind of metallic hardcore that labels like Victory, Trustkill and Ferret released in the mid-90s, then you’ll likely go nuts over this band. All killer, no filler, indeed.

“Holy $#!&* That’s MINOR THREAT!”

FOX always has a good variety of music in its football broadcasts, and in the past the network has played bits of songs from BAD RELIGION, ALKALINE TRIO, TAKING BACK SUNDAY, among others, but during the first half of today’s Broncos v. Eagles broadcast, I nearly jumped from the couch when I heard MINOR THREAT’s “Salad Days” run for 15 seconds or so as the game came back from commercial. There’s no further point to this, but I suppose it’s reassuring that at least someone at FOX has a rich taste in music.

Will iTunes Video “Resurrect” Old TV Shows?

An interesting article was posted on mp3newswire.net earlier this week discussing the potential impact that Apple’s iTunes might have on old television shows that have been forgotten. Unlike re-runs of classics like I Love Lucy or the The Honeymooners there are hundreds of shows that have laid in obscurity, and have seen none of the benefits of a digital afterlife. The internet of course could change all that, and sooner than later. Columnist Richard Menta describes the looming scenario here.

Sunday Playlist & Recommendations

1. THESE GREEN EYES – House of Glass: Out November 8th, this slab of melodic post-hardcore brings the best of SUNNY DAY REAL ESTATE and BY A THREAD.

2. BOYSETSFIRE – The Day The Sun Went Out: Equal Vision is doing a really great thing by reissuing this groundbreaking release. BSF has had their share of ups and down since their inception, but there’s no denying that this album had a huge impact in hardcore across the globe.

3. AT RISK – S/T: Sometimes you just want to listen to something that makes you want to punch holes in the wall. Santa Cruz hardcore is in full-effect with this 20 minute full-length, and the guest vox by GOOD RIDDANCE’s Russ Rankin are tops.

4. GLASSJAW – Everything You Ever Wanted To Know About Silence: Is there an album with a better bass sound than this one? “”When One Eight Becomes Two Zeros”" is one of my most favorite songs of all time.

5. RANCID – And Out Come The Wolves: There are days where it feels like I’ve had “”Old Friend”" stuck in my head for ten years. I’d love to see a deluxe version of this release happen – afterall, this album was the subject of a bidding war with MADONNA and her Maverick Records.
