BAYSIDE “S/T”

Admirably, BAYSIDE has weathered line-up changes, grueling tours, and failed personal expectations in the time since the release of last year’s Sirens and Condolences. On this self-titled full-length, the band aims squarely for a slice of the currently sweet-tasting “Victory Pie.” Surrounded by labelmates that have reached stunning levels of success in a moderate amount [...]

The Punknews.org comments section finally yields a witty joke!

For the most part, the comments sections of the articles on The Org are mindless drivel, but occasionally, a gem is gleaned from the bunch. Courtesy of ‘Org reader el_matt comes this brilliant reply regarding Fat Mike’s response to UNDEROATH dropping off the Warped Tour:

“I think Underoath is just pissed that their last album only went myrrh.”

Bravo, el_matt. Bravo.

Detroit Warped Tour Review

I made a trip to Detroit over the weekend to catch the Warped Tour’s stop at Comerica Park. While the heat was nearly unbearable, I managed to enjoy myself enough to write up a show review.

Also, just to reiterate what has already been said, I am going to be contributing reviews and a bit of news here and there to PastePunk.com. I previously wrote/ran AcclaimedPunk.com for the better part of the last three years and was lucky enough to come into contact with Jordan along the way.

BOYSETSFIRE Hangs It Up; European Tour Still On

From Boysetsfire.org:

“It is not with a heavy heart that we write these words but with a head held high. we wanted to collectively inform you that BOYSETSFIRE has decided to retire. Thank you all for your support and belief in us over the last 12

years… please know it meant the world to us.

BOYSETSFIRE for us was always a vehicle for changing the world and we believe that change comes about by starting with yourself, so instead of awaiting certain things to come our way, as always we decided to take our destiny in our own hands. We’re not sure which path each of us will take from here on out, but we plan to continue following our dreams…

We will play all the shows of our upcoming European tour and possibly one or two last shows on the east coast sometime this fall (we will keep you posted on this). Good-night, BSF”

- Yikes… this has not been a good year for “bands that I listened to a ton and saw often during college.” While it’s tempting to write a drawn out eulogy on these guys (something that us zine editors just have a natural born instinct to do), I’ll simply note that for a number of years, I believed in BOYSETSFIRE – I believed in their music, their ethos, and the fact that they were able to harness their brain power and musical muscle in a way that I found incredibly appealing. I vividly recall those nights blasting “After the Eulogy,” screaming along to “WHERE’S YOUR ANGER? WHERE’S YOUR FUCKING RAGE?” Things may have not gone the band’s way over much of the last couple of years, but for a stretch in 1998-2003, they were seemingly on top of the emo/hardcore world and were truly one of the best.

Short Bits and Bits and Bits…

1. The new WALLS OF JERICHO album With Devils Amongst Us All is simply massive. I’ve loved everything this band has done and I’m flat out blown away by this one. I don’t recall what songs Trustkill has made available from this yet, but I hope “And Hope to Die” gets a public preview before the August 22nd release date.

2. THE DRAFT’s debut In A Million Pieces made for some solid car-trip moments this weekend. Listening to HEAD AUTOMATICA’s Popaganda while driving through the scariest thunderstorm I have ever experienced, however, was not the best fit. I knew I should have brought that INTO THE MOAT disc along with me.

3. Mel Gibson gets arrested for DUI and goes nutso with anti-semetic comments while responding to the arresting officer. I’m glad to see that irony is not dead.

4. The air-conditioning is on at Pastepunk HQ and my in-office thermometer still reads 88 degrees. Ugh.

5. It’s hard to get an appreciation for the distribution reach of certain indie labels while living in a major metropolitan area. While cruising through a Wal-Mart in “small town” New York I was more than impressed by the number of Victory and Vagrant titles on hand. Sure – having major label distribution helps, but I imagine to the common consumer who knows of little distinction between the two formalities, a persual of the music racks shows an impressive showing by the indies.

I head into the mountains for a few days and GORILLA BISCUITS release a new song?!?!

Wow, just wow. They haven’t lost a step. Listen to “At the Matinee” here if you have not done so already and read their “Oral History” in the latest issue of Alternative Press.

Eulogy Nabs DIE YOUNG (TX)

From the inbox:

Take the enraged socio-political perspective of TRIAL, the bloodthirsty sonic assault of TERROR and INTEGRITY, and top it off with the suicidal determination of BLACK FLAG. The end result is Texas’ hardest working hardcore band, DIE YOUNG (TX). “It’s refreshing to listen to a band that can intelligently convey ideas outside of scene politics and the like. And while their lyrical content definitely helps distinguish them, the band still writes and performs perfectly executed hardcore songs.‚Äù writes Michael Phillips from scenepointblank.com.

In less than four years since the band’s inception, Die Young (TX) has played nearly every major city in continental North America (including cities in Alaska!), six countries in Eastern Asia, select locations in Costa Rica and Puerto Rico, and that is just the tip of the iceberg for what is to come for these nomadic punk warriors.

The future looks grim, and Die Young (TX) has set out to confront the oncoming storm with full force and a total disregard for personal consequences. Set to record their debut Eulogy Recordings full length in November, expect an early 2007 release date. Until then, be sure to catch them on tour through the end of 2006 alongside such acts as LIFE LONG TRAGEDY and 7 GENERATIONS.

- Great band. Very cool to finally see them sign to a label that could bring them the kind of attention they deserve. DIE YOUNG (TX) put out two releases on Immigrant Sun Records and highly recommend their EP “Survival Instinct.”
