Supreme Court of Canada Decides Against MP3 Player Tax

From Redherring.com:

Canada’s top court has put to rest a special tax on digital music players that had been intended to compensate musicians for illegal use of their content, cheering levy opponents who argued it unfairly punished people who use MP3 devices for photos and non-music data files.

A Federal Court had struck down the policy last year but the Canadian Private Copying Collective (CPCC), which collects tariffs on behalf of musicians and record companies, later appealed the case.

The Supreme Court of Canada declined to hear further arguments on the case Thursday, all but killing the tax and ensuring MP3 devices will remain cheaper for Canadian consumers.

The CPCC started taking taxes on MP3 players in December 2003 after arguing that MP3 players like iPods were a way to make illegal copies of songs. The levy, the CPCC argued, was a way to pay music creators for unfair use of their work.

DON’T LOOK DOWN “The Fear In Love”

If there’s one thing that Brian McTernan is known for, it’s his reputation for taking above average bands and bringing out qualities latent within them that were previously unaddressed. DON’T LOOK DOWN, with their second full-length, “The Fear In Love” prove that such transitions can be downright remarkable. For eleven extremely solid tracks, DON’T LOOK [...]

Here’s a journal entry the band posted today (7/29):

All is well at team S.A.S. We are into the third day of the Pure Volume Free Fall tour with Haste the Day, Still Remains, and Kane Hodder. The shows have been great and we are in Sacto, CA tonight playing at the Underground. The trip out to Seattle, WA for the first show was a long one, but after 52 hours, one alternator, and way too much Taco Johns we rolled into Seattle only to be greeted by 5 o’clock grid lock. Sweet. We arrived at El Corazon only 30 minutes before doors and rushed to set up and get rolling. The show was awesome. There were a ton of people from Seattle as well as all over Washington state having fun and sweating it out with us. Next stop was Portland, OR. No rain and blue skies. The show was a hot one but a real blast. Solid State show was sold out and I am not sure how they squeezed everyone inside, but squeeze they did. Great show. Tonight we play Sacto, CA and get to get some rest before heading south in Cali. The tour is going great and we look forward to seeing all of you at the shows. Big ups to all the Synners and Street Teamers who have been showing up at the shows and hangin posters and post cards. It means a lot to us. Thanks and take care.

S.A.S

- Now this is a Friday treat!!
