WaPo Profiles DC’s Iconic 9:30 Club

Now in it’s 30th year, DC’s well-known music venue 9:30 Club was treated a Washington Post Magazine cover story this past weekend. With its history covering in part the birth of punk and hardcore in the nation’s capital and carrying on through to its second (and much bigger, nicer) location in the mid 90s, in a gritty section near the famed U Street corridor, it’s nearly impossible to remove the club from the musical fabric of the city. Having been a patron of the venue for the past 12 years, it quickly became my favorite place to catch a show (well… most of the others closed down, but anyway…) and for seeing many independent bands start as opening acts there and eventually headline the place several years later (THRICE, AFI, TAKING BACK SUNDAY, DASHBOARD CONFESSIONAL, RISE AGAINST, etc.). You can check out the interactive feature here, which includes an interview with MINOR THREAT’s Ian MacKaye, as well as quotes from longtime club-goers, owners, promoters, and so forth. It’s a must visit place for anyone making a trip to the city.
