Senate passes PIRATE ACT

From Digital Music News:

US Senate Unanimously Passes Pirate Act

The US Senate unanimously passed the Pirate Act Friday without a hearing, putting the bill up for approval by the House and President. The bill will allow the Department of Justice, along with copyright holders, to file civil lawsuits against alleged copyright violators. If signed into law, the Pirate Act would add a very large muscle to current RIAA (and MPAA) copyright enforcement efforts. The DOJ has the ability to create a massive anti-piracy drive, one that could expand RIAA lawsuits by many multiples. Per Sen. Orrin Hatch: “”Tens of thousands of continuing civil enforcement actions might be needed to generate the necessary deterrence.”"

- …something tells me that the attorneys at the DOJ didn’t strive to become a “”DOJ lawyer”" to fight the economic threats presented by their sons and daughters swapping songs on P2P networks…
