WEATHERBOX @ Clutch Cargos, Pontiac, MI 9/21/07 Show Review by Corey Schmidt
WEATHERBOX brought their awesome brand of SAY ANYTHING-meets-CRITERIA rock to the suburbs of Detroit as a part of their tour supporting mainstream hopefuls CARTEL. The San Diego quartet released American Art earlier this year through Doghouse and played seven songs from the album during their allotted time span. About as "normal" as they come in this music scene, the members of WEATHERBOX performed their songs very well to a rather stagnant Clutch Cargos crowd. Despite this, the band encouraged crowd participation especially during some of their more dance-y numbers. The highlight of their set for me came at the tail end when they announced they'd be playing their album closing opus "Trippin' The Life Fantastic." The song sounded amazing live with vocalist Brian Warren stepping out from behind the mic for the first time of the night in order to energize the crowd a bit. Also of note was the additional keyboard notes a member of THE HONORARY TITLE provided for the jamming ending. I could have used a bit more energy on the part of Warren and his bandmates, but as a whole, WEATHERBOX put forth a genuine effort, and sometimes that's about all you can ask for.
