WOLFTRON “Flesh And Fears”

As frontman of DAPHNE LOVES DERBY, Kenny Choi has had the chance to write upbeat, melodic pop-rock songs in the vein of MAE and COPELAND. And although there are a ton of bands out there that fit this mold, Choi’s band has always done it in commendable fashion. For whatever reason, Choi’s latest musical adventure is a solo-project that goes by the name WOLFTRON. The basic goal is the same as it is with DAPHNE: write well-constructed, melodic pop songs. The biggest difference, however, is in the tempo of the music. Because most of the songs on Flesh And Fears feature ambient or acoustic guitar tones and/or bits and pieces of programming help, the songs are overwhelmingly dreamy and atmospheric. Some songs are still rather poppy (“Ms. Luna Grim”) while others are incredibly subdued (“Stones”). Through it all, Choi’s vocals are solid as ever, and his compositions are worthy of recognition. That said, I’m not sure this is such a drastic departure from the DAPHNE stuff that it couldn’t have been looked at as the next step for that band. Either way, through his two projects, Choi has proven that he is a top-notch songwriter with a taste for a broad range of pop-rock music.
