Various Artists “Sample This, Too!”

In celebration of their historic 20 years in punk rock, BYO has showcased their most recent signings and releases with this super cheap ($2.99 retail), super high-quality sampler of punk fuckin’ rock. Most attractive to those searching to find a reason to buy this release is the inclusion of two tracks from the upcoming forth volume of BYO’s split CD series, this one featuring the BOUNCING SOULS and ANTI-FLAG. Both songs rip, especially the one by the ‘SOULS, featuring one of their hardest, fatest tunes since the days of the “Self-Titled” and “Maniacal Laughter” releases. The new ANTI-FLAG song is cool, but a tad redundant of their previous works – though I was pleasantly surprised to hear Chris #2 sing this one and not Mr. Sane. Another huge slice of happiness for me with this release is a brand new YOUTH BRIGADE song, their first recorded material in a few years!! The vocals sound gruffer, but the music still destroys. Word has it, they should have a new full length out in 2003. Other previously unreleased material comes from their newly inked darlings, ONE MAN ARMY and THE BELTONES, as well as THE FORGOTTEN, MANIC HISPANIC (err…not very good) and recently released tunage from THE UNSEEN, PISTOL GRIP (great, great band, check these guys out!!), SIXER (another neat band) KOSHER, and MANIFESTO JUKEBOX. There’s even a LEATHERFACE song on here as well, but it’s one from their split with HOT WATER MUSIC from a few years back. To round out the release, RANCID’s cover of “Vanilla Sex,” and NOFX’s cover of “Corozon de Oro,” make this a truly must buy. Great artwork completes this sampler, and when considering the extremely low price of $2.99, if punk rock is in your diet, eat a steady meal of BYO.
