UNSUNG ZEROS “Moments From Mourning”

In terms of modern power-punk bands with a slick, poppy feel, I’ve held the UNSUNG ZEROS in fairly high regard for the past few years. Through persistence and devoted practice in songwriting, I feel that this band has finally grown into the kind of musical outfit that they’ve always had in them all along. “Moments From Mourning,” the band’s second proper full length shows the band moving away from pursuing a recklessly speedy sound into a more calculated power-pop feeling, where the vocals can assimilate into the music better, and where the guitar work is given a greater opportunity to shine. Unlike their previous full-length, “The People Mover,” which felt like it was moving at hyperspeed the whole while, “Moments from Mourning” gives the listener a greater opportunity to engage in singing-along and appreciating the band’s craftsmanship. It also helps this time around, THE UNSUNG ZEROS are given a very professional, bold sounding production that is above all, well-balanced. “Pictures” opens this disc off, it’s one of the catchiest tunes to be found, though at more four minutes in length, tends to the drag the band in terms of concentration. Fortunately, most of the following songs follow in the three-minute range and are more concise. “Postcards Home,” from their previous EP and “Always It Will Be The Same,” from “The People Mover” have both been re-recorded and they sound better than ever. “Intermission” finds this band trying out a quieter, more intricate sound and the more laid back tunes provides a good breather from the amped up counterparts. I’ve always dug the reflective, experiential lyrics this band has penned due to their earnestness, and everything about “Moments From Mourning” finds this band just as honest and personal as before. If you think bands like MIDTOWN and NEW FOUND GLORY are too slick and commercial sounding, give the UNSUNG ZEROS a chance to win you over with their unbridled enthusiasm and charm.
