TOO PURE TO DIE “Confidence and Consequence”

As a straight-up hardcore release, there’s nothing fundamentally wrong about TOO PURE TO DIE’s Confidence and Consequence. The music is aggressive, loud, and conservative in its approach to songwriting. It’s as rewarding as ordering a hamburger medium-well at your local bar and grill. Unfortunately, the line-cook tried to dress up your burger by sticking a banana on top. Trustkill and TOO PURE TO DIE gussied up Confidence and Consequence from its original iteration by re-recording nine songs with new vocalist Paul Zurlo, and then sending it off for a remix/remastering job by Andreas Magnusson. The result is a sound that is way, waaaay too polished for the band’s TERROR/SWORN ENEMY-inspired attack. Worse, the capturing of the lead vocals makes it feel like Zurlo is a hundred paces ahead of the rhythm section. Obviously, the caliber of the songwriting isn’t affected by these ‘aesthetic’ issues, but the awkward compression of the recording makes it seem like you’re standing too close to a passing train. Here’s to hoping their next record is a more organic experience.
