TODAY I WAIT “Timelines”

For the first three songs on this release, TODAY I WAIT make no bones about the fact that they play straight-up metalcore that’s not for the faint-hearted or aimed towards to a meathead audience. With a healthy dose of mathy arrangements, intriguingly poetic lyrics, and a vocalist that sounds closer to a grizzly bear than a blender, TODAY I WAIT seem armed to the teeth in bringing the mosh. But then an unfortunate thing happens – the band covers “Bullet” by THE MISFITS and the song sounds horribly out of place, and then these guys go on for a few minutes with some instrumental noodling that completes the moodkill. By the time the band rolls back to the metalcore on the sixth track, the momentum struggles to return and never quite reaches its peak again that’s displayed in the first half. However, on the seventh and final track, the band unleashes its most potent song, “Troubleshooting,” which features both a disturbingly crunchy guitar attack, and a touch of melodic singing between the screams. The band sounds quite full-bodied on this song, and the haunting breakdown at the end is very much stylistically in line with early stuff from the Ferret Records camp. So in summary, the goalposts of this release are impressive, but the middle period of divergence is ineffective and altogether, a hindrance to this band’s talents. TODAY I WAIT have potential, but it’s unfortunately mirred in conflicting directions.
