TIME FLIES, CRISPUS ATTUCKS, THURSDAY, MAJORITY RULE, NO JUSTICE @ The Wilson Center, DC. 12/4/99.

This was a pretty good show, all the bands rocked in their own sort of way, and the crowd was really into it until they left after CRISPUS ATTUCKS without staying to see one of the best hardcore bands around, TIME FLIES. Folks, that is unacceptable, this band deserves a lot of respect. They filled in at the last possible second because KID DYNAMITE was supposed to play, but they broke up the day before, and this was not a nice way to thank them. Okay, so back to the show itself. NO JUSTICE opened up first and their set was probably the craziest one I have seen in a while. Their music was decent youth crew sounding hardcore, but their onstage antics and quite possibly having the best jumping, energetic vocalist is what makes this band what they are. And let me tell ya, this was the first time that I have ever seen the opening band draw the largest crowd. Huge pile ons, stage dives in droves, and by the end, lots of blood too. I found myself laughing more than listening though because their singer was truely intent on either breaking his neck by jumping into spots where there weren’t any people, or was more interested in destorying equipment such as the drummer’s mic stand and a cymbal and stand which he threw into the crowd causing a wave of people getting the fuck out of the way. All I can say is that I’m glad that I’m a wuss and was standing in the back of the room.

MAJORITY RULE played second, and they were okay, nothing too special though, and half of the crowd was outside of the place instead of watching, so it was kinda lame. This band was better the last time I saw them live, but anyway, their sound is heavy hardcore with lotsa metal and emo influences and brutal vocals. Third up was an emocore band from New Jersey named THURSDAY who were pretty good at what they do, and it was neat that they traveled to DC to play the show. Their lyrics were really really interesting- highly intelligent and personal with a story embedded within each one. Unfortunately, one of their guitarist’s station wagon got broken into and a bunch of stuff was stolen, which sucked big time. I hate when shit like that happens, especially to people who came a long way to play. I bought their cd, and I hope they get back to Jersey safely. CRIPUS ATTUCKS played fourth and they should have headlined as it seemed that this was the other band that everyone there wanted to see. Awesome hardcore played the way those great bands in the 80s did it, kinda like BLACK FLAG but a bit faster. If you live in the MD/VA/DC area, you like this band, plain and simple. Let’s just say they know how to work a crowd. Circle pits and stage dives, a good time was had by all.

TIME FLIES closed the evening off to only about 50 of the 150 people that came to show, and as I mentioned before, that should never happen, but regardless, they played a tight set that was a lot of fun, and I even piled on during “”Play the Fool,”" which is one of my absolute favorite songs. I could have done without the kick to the face and the gang tackle that dragged me around by my shoulder, and my glasses were just fine the way they were before the “”loosening,”" but oh well, I enjoyed every minute of it. See this band live and pick up their cd, “”On our Way.”" Good show, very good show.
