THIS DAY FORWARD “Kairos”

Some bands exhibit “potential” right from the start. With their second full-length, and first for Eulogy in late 2000, THIS DAY FORWARD showed off some killer talent with their release, “The Transient Effects of Light on Water.” That disc was on honest metalcore blasting, full of sick timing changes, fresh vocals and guitar work that rocked you like a plate-shift. Since then, these guys have gone through some line-up changes and have progressed in ways that are beyond measure. Featuring a more artistic, less screamy, but more thumpin’ style, THIS DAY FORWARD have moved up in the evolutionary scale of hardcore bands. “Karios” is a five song EP (20 mintues) that jam-packed with grooves, melodic passages and loads of style. Reminding me of THURSDAY, THIS YEARS MODELS and even some SILENT MAJORITY, the emphasis with this band has shifted into craftwork rather than pure devastation. One the strongest points of this band is the vocal work of Mike Shaw, who sounds quite comfortable in his transitions between singing and screaming. THURSDAY’s Geoff Rickly does guest vocals on the last track, “Sunfalls and Watershine” and the overall effect is stunning. Laden with this more accessible sound, THIS DAY FORWARD should pick up more fans in time. I can’t wait for another full length.
