THE YOUNG AND THE USELESS “A Smile Is No Good For Me”

As a relatively young label, I’m still waiting to see what’s going to be the break-out release for Thorp Records. After playing “A Smile is No Good For Me,” i’m sincerely hoping that THE YOUNG AND THE USELESS are that band. The vocals are distinctly in the vein of GRADE, and the music is pretty close to where that band was during “Separate the Magnets,” but the pace is quicker and more ferocious. As blah a term “emo-core” could be at any given second, I think it fits this band perfectly as every facet of their music and lyrics seems like a prelude to therapy (though, the song title, “My Feelings For You Exist No More” is a bit strenous). “It Hurt, but it’s over, and so are we,” is one of the more honest, blunt tunes on the disc, but unfortunately, a song like “Money Hungry Girls,” brings this band’s empathy meter down a few notches. As this disc does all of its work in a shade over thirty minutes (10 songs), it’s a very refreshing treat at seeing aggressive music bluster through a windy path and level all the trees in the process. The cover art on here was done by Derek Hess and the beautiful layout was completed by Atomid-ID, all bonus points in my book. If you prefer your hardcore devoid of any obvious metallic tendencies are more interested in speed and raw emotional discharge, than couting out the mosh parts or finding the absolute perfect time to perfect your best kick-boxing move, THE YOUNG AND THE USELESS offer a very snappy product. I’d definitely like to see a lot more people taking notice of this band.
