THE GO! TEAM “Thunder, Lightning, Strike”

THE GO! TEAM utilizes synthesized beats, samples, and female vocals to create a unique indie dance sound. I realize, as repulsive as it may be, that this same description could be used for the GWEN STEFANI solo album. However, this is an album that GWEN wishes she could have made. Thunder, Lightning, Strike was originally released in 2004 in Great Britain to rave reviews. Hailed as showing some of the same qualities that have led to the success of THE STREETS and GORILLAZ, Sony rushed the album for a 2005 stateside release in hopes to capitalize on the success of these bands. Although THE GO! TEAM has yet to reach the major radio and television play of these other bands, their buzz has continually been growing in the world of indie music. It is hard to place Thunder, Lightning, Strike in one specific genre as it is a mixture of hip-hop, oldies, funk, and many other sampled sounds. The album contains a muddled mix that embraces all elements of sound involved. The lead vocals are thin and bare with a female singer that combines a style that is influenced as much by DIANA ROSS as it is by today’s contemporary artists. Often occurring is a cheerleader type shouting that brings a unique energy level to the songs. From start to finish, Thunder, Lightning, Strike contains the energy of a high school pep band without ever letting the danceability lessen THE GO! TEAM is bringing forth a unique and daring sound that no one else is doing at this time. Thunder, Lightning, Strike is not the best release of the year, but I find myself coming back to each enjoyable listen whenever I crave music that stands apart from its peers. At the least, I recommend this album as something that is seemingly overflowing with fun.
