THE BLACK SEA “S/T EP”

I don’t want to harp on this too much, because no band wants to rest on the laurels of their previous endeavors, but this band is a descendant of FRODUS, a band I hugely admired, saw live numerous times, and seemed to break up at the height of their best work, the largely underappreciated “And We Washed Our Weapons in The Sea,” out on Fueled By Ramen. With that said, and with a few years placed in between, Shelby Cinca and Jason Hamacher of FRODUS of bassist, Joe Lally of FUGAZI, make up THE BLACK SEA, and this three song EP serves as a teaser to a full-length to be released later this year. There’s an interesting sound coming from this band, that while familiar to what I expect it to be, diverges slightly to evoke something more common from current CAVE IN material, especially on the second track, “Landscapes.” The third track, “Wingless Fire” is quite ethereal, with a drony, fuzzy backround, over whispery guitars and timid vocals. I’m not sure how it all works together, but I like it. Bring on the full-length!
