SOUNDS LIKE VIOLENCE “The Pistol”

Can a band that lacks a frenetic pace still bring the rock with frenetic energy? SOUNDS LIKE VIOLENCE would have me say “hell yea.” A technically proficient band always makes it seem like they can do more with less, and this six song disc from this Swedish four-piece confirms that thought. Finding themselves somewhere between the confines of purebred rock and post-punk depth, SOUNDS LIKE VIOLENCE heap on gobs of sizzling swagger and sterling melodies. Lead vocalist Andreas Soderlund has a very unique pitch to his voice that tends to lash out in tones of bitterness. Although contemptuous behavior is no stranger to indie rock, SOUNDS LIVE VIOLENCE bring it on with none of the usual accompanying vulnerabilities. Driving dual guitars propel the 27 minutes of music on here to feel like a fairly brisk outing, and “The Pistol” is undoubtedly enhanced by the fantastic drumming of Daniel Petersson, whose fills are intense, often, and varied. The dearth of easy-to-locate songwriting hooks is sort of a dual-edged sword for this band, but nothing on “The Pistol” will leave you bored, staring at the lines on your palm. A band like DILLINGER ESCAPE PLAN sounds like violence; SOUNDS LIKE VIOLENCE sound like the animus of a heated sports rivalry.
