SIXER “Saving Grace”

Alrighty, this is a pretty easy review. Let’s do in recipe style. Take a gruffer ANN BERETTA, simmer for 20 minutes, add in a big bowl of AVAIL, minus the crazy breakdowns, and top it all off with some HOT WATER MUSIC and DROPKICK MURPHYS spices. Actually SIXER sizzle with a pretty original sound, but sometimes they combine so many different stylistic elements, the similarities among their contemporaries shine fairly bright. Fortunately for myself, I happen to like all of the aforementioned bands, so SIXER appease my tastes. The best part of this disc is its authenticity. There is no doubt that SIXER are a ferocious punk rock band at heart, and they wear their anthemtic traits on their sleeves. Each song is hooky, fast, and melodic – despite the harshness of the vocals – probably due to many, many years of hard driking. The ANN BERETTA influence is probably the strongest of all, and thus the album has its CLASH and RANCID like moments as well. The fifth track, “Revenge,” smokes with the most fury, though many of the other tunes whirl with intensity too. After a few listens, the SIXER disc isn’t all that memorable, but when it’s playing, it’s highly enjoyable – and odd combination. The artwork throughout the entire package is quite stunning. The booklet looks really sharp as does the back of the disc. Akin to the music etched inside, “Saving Grace,” is a quality product all the way around. If you dig rough around the edges punk rock that works best in a smoky bar, SIXER has your ticket.
