RISE AND FALL “Into Oblivion”

Belgium’s RISE AND FALL is the latest Deathwish Inc. roster acquisition to a line-up that already has enough depth to float a hardcore all-star team. This four-piece powerhouse delivers a stinging rebuke to all liars, fakes, and enemies, as the band throttles through a blazing inferno of metallic hardcore bliss. Thunderous riffs crackle above a low-end thwacking, giving RISE AND FALL an intimidating presence. While stark lyrics and battered personal demons pepper RISE AND FALL songs, most the words coming from vocalist Bjorn are overshadowed by the band’s musical cacophony. An obvious old-school footing helps Into Oblivion establish solid connections with an earlier crop of hardcore bands. RISE AND FALL’s European label, Reflections Records, pretty much nails it on the head when they say that the band’s sound is a blend of “Clevo and New York Hardcore” with nods to bands like RINGWORM, INTEGRITY, CRO-MAGS and LEEWAY. At only ten songs, with the last being a droning instrumental, Into Oblivion breaks spinal cords for a violent 24 minutes, and then allows the dark, scraping guitars to fill the air. Not as mindblowing as Deathwish’s recent offerings from MODERN LIFE IS WAR and KILLING THE DREAM, but a demanding and draining release nonetheless.
