NEW IDEA SOCIETY “S/T”

Hmm…nope. This kinda hurts to write this review since I’m a big fan of Steven Brodsky and his solo work, plus his stuff in CAVE IN, but this EP is quite the let down. NEW IDEA SOCIETY is made up not only of Mr. Brodsky, but Mike Law, the singer in the LOW END THEORY as well (he wrote all the songs on this), which is definitely a band that you should check out if you are unaware of them. This EP is only four relatively short, fuzzy pop tracks done on a four-track recorder. I’m really not a fan of low-fi stuff, but it isn’t completely without likable traits. Somewhere I read that this disc has “shoegazing” moments. What the heck does that mean? Anyway, The lyrics are creative, and a wee bit spastic as well. I have no clue what song two, “Alibi On the Menu, Weakness on the Menu,” is about, and I have a feeling that if someone was to attempt to explain to me, all they would get back would be a blank stare. Contrary to the music, the packaging is absolutely beautiful and engaging. The various drawings are awesome and the overall feeling is really solid – too bad I can’t say the same about the music. However, this is completely a taste thing, and maybe I’ll just have to play it a few more times to appreciate it more.
