NEW DIREXION “S/T”

If this disc had only come out during the height of the ska/punk mainstream fiasco, these guys could have been huge by now. But the fact is, this is now 2001, not 1996, and to be a popular ska/punk act, you have to be really freaking good. Fortunately for NEW DIREXION they have mastered that requirement. This self-titled debut release is a smoking combination of LESS THAN JAKE. GREEN DAY, CATCH 22, and GOLDFINGER type influences. Most importantly, there is barely any of that “wanka wanka” guitar sound that made ska so irritating – this is pure power punk (with the often LINK 80 style ghetto-breakdown) matched with a killer trumpet player. These lads appear to rather young (still in high-school?), but they have learned the importance in writing disgustingly catchy tunes, all of which have a healthy dosage of lyrical introspection and redeeming charm. Another plus from NEW DIREXION is that they are not hindered by the disease of having all of their songs sound the same. There’s loads of tempo shifts, style changes, and other pecularities that keep the disc fresh thoughout. The first track, “Asbury,” is a ripper, going on at full throttle, but the next few slow it down to a more head bobbing pace. The seventh track, “Stand Up,” is one of the band member’s ode to straight-edge, and it takes on a wicked hardcore/rap vibe, kinda like E-TOWN CONCRETE, but without the seriousness – it’s odd, but still pretty cool. This band’s drummer should get some credit too as he’s extremely skilled in doing some technical stuff. The recording is crisp and expansive, as you can hear all of the various instruments with clarity and balance. The artwork is stunning – done by none other than Jake Bannon of Atomic! ID. Never underestimate the importance of sharp, eye appealing artwork, the theme of the booklet and such corresponds really well with the overall tone of this band. If you’re not into the whole ska/punk thing, I’m pretty sure NEW DIREXION wont change your stance, but if you like a few of the heavyweights in the genre, then I’m sure you’ll find happiness with this band too. I know I have…
