MINUS THE BEAR “Acoustics”

One of MINUS THE BEAR’s greatest strengths has always been their ability to refine their sound and innovate with each new release. While Acoustics consists of six previously released songs (and one disposable new song called “Guns and Ammo”), the acoustic interpretations shed a fresh new light on familiar songs. MINUS THE BEAR have largely been viewed as a “technical” band, but Acoustics aims the focus on the core songs lying under the tapping, sequencing and noodling.

The well-planned renditions replete with pianos, hand claps and minimalist drumming elevate Acoustics above acoustic albums that most bands release. Songs like “We Are Not A Football Team” and “Pachuca Sunrise” stand as strong if not stronger than their original versions. They were also aware of aspects of their jammier songs from Planet of Ice that needed to be cut. Their ability to edit and arrange for the medium is yet another testament to their ability as musicians and songwriters.

Acoustics certainly isn’t an album that I’d pass to people to turn them on to MINUS THE BEAR (perhaps with the exception of “We Are Not A Football Team” and “Pachuca Sunrise”), but it is a must have album for any existing fan.
