Mark’s Favorites of 2007

What a strange year, 365 days of music and I couldn’t even come up with a list of my ten favorite albums of the year. Yes, there were plenty of records I enjoyed, but the albums on a best of list should stand the test of time and not include albums that enjoyed a two or three week sparkle and fade infatuation. I suspect that this may have to do with my reliance on services like Yahoo Music Unlimited and Rhapsody. They give you access to every record under the sun, but lead to a rather pedestrian relationships with music. As such, I will be buying lots of music in ’08 so that this does not happen again. With that said, I present my limited list in no certain order.

SPOON – Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga My transformation into a SPOON fan still astonishes me to this day. I not only like ‘Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga’, I love it! This is a complete 180 from me nearly falling asleep at their secret SXSW Merge showcase show in March. One of my friends explained that you have to feel SPOON. Needless to say I found my toes tapping one night at about 3AM to this record and its been tapping ever since.
FEIST – The Reminder Yes, this album is on everyone’s list, but can you blame anyone? Her impeccable songwriting and arrangements made for an album that I’ll be listening to for years to come. Her videos are also top notch.
MINUS THE BEAR – Planet of Ice While ‘Planet of Ice’ may not be the album that I play people when I want to get them into MINUS THE BEAR, the album is undeniable. You really have to listen to the entire album to truly appreciate it. I’m not sure if this was intentional, but the album ebbs and flows perfectly. It doesn’t even reach it’s apex until the middle of “Double Vision Quest”, the 9th of the 10 tracks that make up the album. I saw them at Irving Plaza and danced a lot.
LILY ALLEN – Alright Still This album made my ‘06 best of the year list and constant iPod rotation as well as an early ’07 US release allows this album to sneak onto my best of 2007 list.
BAND OF HORSES – Cease To Begin This is a late entry onto the list and I’m not sure if I’ll stand by it six months into 2008, but I have faith that the soaring vocals of Ben Birdwell will make this album a keeper.
A WILHELM SCREAM – Career Suicide While lacking singles like “Famous Friends and Fashion Drunks”, Career Suicide still brings it with breathtaking songs, lyrics and the disgusting instrumentals we’ve all come to expect from A WILHELM SCREAM. The lyrics hints at a general disillusion with the music industry and generally focuses on the fact that they are still barely scraping by even after their expected big break never really happened. Hopefully they can find a new home and keep sticking it out.
BLOC PARTY – A Weekend In The City Some people flogged this record for being boring, but it is leaps and bounds above their debut LP. The production is impeccable, songwriting is top notch and it fills the void that COLDPLAY left by not releasing an album in 2007. You must listen to this record with headphones.
