LOOK MEXICO “This Is Animal Music”

LOOK MEXICO’s first full-length release, This Is Animal Music, is essentially an easing and consistently flowing album. From the playful opening of “You Come Into My House, While I Sleep?” where vocalist Matt Agrella sings “sleep now, but remember to wake up” in as carefree a manner as such a line would suggest to the tranquil, piano-tinged closer “I Like Being A Millionare. You Will Too, Belive Me,” LOOK MEXICO never takes a break on Animal Music. Although comparisons to AMERICAN FOOTBALL’s moody emo have been made quite liberally, there are hints of everything from MINUS THE BEAR to FROM MONUMENT TO MASSES to MOCK ORANGE to EXPLOSIONS IN THE SKY in the quartet’s music. Because the songs are simple at heart, the band creates an incredibly soothing yet spirited atmosphere that never stales over the course of forty-one minutes. Dispersed among the band’s tightly performed songs are occasional instrumental or near-instrumental tracks such as “Watch Out For This,” “Comin’ In Hot With A Side Of Bacon,” and “Dude, You Have A Bazooka.” Here, the band often works with building atmospherics and sound clips which make for nice, well-placed breaks…however unneeded they may be. The latter song mentioned leads into one of the album’s most intriguing tracks, “You Ever Get Punched In The Face For Talking Too Much?” With a touch of Midwestern emo and a solid helping of southern twang, this is easily the most original track on the record (and the extra vocals from BAND MARINO’s Nathan Bond don’t hurt either!). Much more could be said about This Is Animal Music‘s greatness, but put simply, LOOK MEXICO has written a brilliant record that can bring about a smile just as easily as it can soundtrack one’s late night contemplation.
