LIGEIA “Bad News”

Fundamentally, LIGEIA are not a ripoff band, but one gets the impression that they’re trying to hard to paint themselves as a bunch of desperate louts surrounded by bad women, bad drugs, and overall trouble – with a metal/hardcore soundtrack looming in the background. Where have I heard this before?. Whether or not this is an improvement from the band’s debut full-length, Your Ghost Is A Gift remains to be seen, but the band does make a significant departure from their early unmistakable POISON THE WELL influence. Highlighting LIGEIA’s progression is a song like “Johnny Cash,” which broods with DEFTONES’ like melodic vocals and a churning wall of guitars and mid-tempo percussive thump. The melodic vocals add an ALEXISONFIRE flair to Bad News and are the obvious standout quality to LIGEIA’s craft. All is not entirely new on Bad News – the two-minute stomper “Teenage Wasteland” reminds the listener that these can tear it up with the best of them, and UNEARTH’s Ken Susi didn’t get on board with production duties without a good reason. I’m still not convinced that LIGEIA is a band that anyone has to go run out and listen to, but I wouldn’t flee to the exits if they were playing live before me either.
