LAYMEN TERMS “3 Weeks In EP”

This limited edition EP is pretty much a promotional item for LAYMEN TERM’s upcoming full-length for Suburban Home. The title track, a six minute long opus of sorts is a declaration of change for the band, moving them far and wide from their previous highly-structured, rigid post-hardcore sound, and into the grander, more experimental realm of harder indie rock. The progression is pretty dramatic, and at first, and second blush, it seems like the dudes in LAYMEN TERM’s have been listening to a lot “Jupiter” era CAVE IN. Hot diggity! The other three songs of this EP create an interesting hodgepodge – the first of which is a beautiful cover of THE BEATLES song, “While My Guitar Gently Weeps.” Andrew Tanner’s vocal talents truly emerge on this cover, and the more I listen to it, the more I am moved by it. The third track is an acoustic version of one of the band’s older tunes, “Tired Minds,” which is feels very mediocre and languid compared to the first two songs. The last track on here, “Perfect World,” is an exclusive to this EP as well, and is a total question mark, as the band shifts into melodic hardcore territory with THRICE-like guitar riffing and machine-gun double-bass. The song feels sorely out of place on here, but is still kinda cool. I’d consider this to be a “fans only” release or a person who lives and dies for great BEATLES covers, but regardless, “3 Weeks In” definitely gets the job done in sowing the seeds of anticipation for LAYMEN TERMS upcoming full-length.
