JIL STATION “Still Love”

Out of the same Atlanta underground that brought COPELAND to life comes another chill indie rock band called JIL STATION. Not quite as poppy as Copeland, the guys in Jil Station opt for a more relaxed, piano-driven indie sound on their debut album Still Love. Lead by the baritone vocals of Kyle Dreaden, Jil Station immediately separate themselves from the common stereotypes that fuel this type of music. In the opening track, “Murder”, there’s a hint of country twang to the guitars that Dreaden perfectly fits his voice to. No matter what these guys try to do, whether its groove-oriented rock (“My Gun Is Gorgeous”) or classically-inclined ballads (“Vangaurd”), Dreaden’s vocals remain constant in the mix. With such a subdued tone, however, the band doesn’t always do their best to keep the listeners interest. The album doesn’t gain any speed until the memorable fourth tune, “Parlour”, before losing some steam with a slew of Police-influenced songs. Even with a few solid track, Still Love is a borderline boring offering, but with the right mix of guitar-heavy and piano-driven tunes, JIL STATION could have this sound down on a future release.
