FACE TO FACE “Standards and Practices”

If i’m not mistaken, I believe this album of covers was released as an import in 1999, and is just now becoming available in the States. The run down is fairly simple: FACE TO FACE covers 10 of their favorite songs, by a variety of influential and dominating artists of the past and present. Their are ten tracks on here that clock in just over the 30 minute mark, and the song selection is pretty good. Then again, there’s always the monotny factor. FACE TO FACE has been one of the main contributors to that So. Cal. melodic punk sound, and they somehow managed to even make their covers sound like FACE TO FACE songs. My personal favorites included, “Chesterfield King (JAWBREAKER),” “The KKK took my baby away (THE RAMONES),” and “Merchandise (FUGAZI).” All in all, this is a fair listen, though not essential by any means. One of the interesting things about this release is that it was recorded in the span of four days, and as opposed to F2F’s usual remarkably clear sound, these songs are far more raw and less polished. I happen to think it works really well actually. If you dig FACE TO FACE, then you will most definitely dig this, but if this band is new to you, I highly recommend their latest release, “Reactionary,” instead.
