EVANESCENCE “Fallen”

A few months ago, not only was this band unheard of outside their local region, but the radio was free of the song “Bring Me To Life.” But alas, now one can’t more than 15 minutes without practically hearing this one somewhere on the dial – and I’m okay with that. What’s weird about this band is that it reminds me exactly of what would happen if the Italian band, LACUNA COIL went through some kind of nu-metal processing plant – sucking out the “awe” and embedding in plenty of “hmm…cool.” The signature LINKIN’ PARK style guitars are all over this disc, but what happens to set this band into fairly high regarded parameters is the generous use of vocal choirs and an often somber, but powerful ballard amidst the harder jams. It may appear formulaic at times, and in line with most hard rock major label discs, but EVANESCENCE have a studio feeling that’s much more genuine sounding and interesting to the ear. The only major drawback I have with this disc is that the lead single’s additional mixing is so much stronger sounding than the mixing on the rest of the material on here, and it’s impossible to ignore the imbalance when listening to this disc straight through. Anyway, “Fallen” for some reason has had the ability to stay close to my stereo, and even though it isn’t nearly as enthralling as the aforementioned LACUNA COIL, it has an original quality and allure to it that doesn’t want to leave my mind.
