ENVY ON THE COAST “S/T”

ENVY ON THE COAST pretty much sprung up out of nowhere to land major tours with acts like 30 SECONDS TO MARS, ANGELS AND AIRWAVES, and HEAD AUTOMATICA despite the fact that they hadn’t properly released an album. Signed to the up-start label Photo Finish Records, ENVY ON THE COAST plays fairly standard rock music with a pop edge on their self-titled debut EP. Comprised of five songs, the Long Island-based band covers a lot of ground throughout the EP’s duration. The opener “Paperback” is a radio-ready rock tune in the vein of INCUBUS while the song that directly follows, “You Won’t Hear This,” sounds like a piano ballad disguised as PANIC! AT THE DISCO circus-rock before eventually reaching for the big-top with a slew of strings and piano concluding the track. “Temper Temper” takes a cue from fellow Long Islanders TAKING BACK SUNDAY with its clever lyrics and catchy appeal before “Suckerpunch” breaks out with aggressive guitars and an eventual post-hardcore build-up complete with somewhat screamy vocals. The closer, “Green Eyes Don’t Lie,” is maybe the most diverse track of the bunch as its swirling riffs and belt-your-lungs-out vocals lead the tune despite a mid-track breakdown that wouldn’t sound out of place in a SAOSIN song. At this point in their existence, I don’t think ENVY ON THE COAST has found their true identity, but they definitely have the potential to become a rather powerful force in the realm of indie-released rock n’ roll.
