DEVILLE “Pleasure To Burn”

As tastes in the United States have largely shifted away from that Fat/Epitaph melodic hardcore sound of the mid 90s, there’s been a real void in seriously good bands that take part in that genre. Thankfully, our northern friends in Canada have been pumping out the goods, and this debut full length from DEVILLE is a fantastic musical tribute to their influences – namely STRUNG OUT, GOOD RIDDANCE, and BAD RELIGION. So if you don’t mind a small lack in originality that’s taken care of by solid musicianship and songwriting, read on. Both speed, and a beefy guitar sound dominate DEVILLE’s style, and the result is a high-octene performance that hardly ever lets up. Complimented by a darn good drummer and stand out vocals (and harmonies), these guys have all the necessary components of a great band covered. Well except for the lyrics which are rather ordinary, but that’s okay. Assisted by the wonderful production of Blair Calibaba (who did TRIAL’s “Are These Our Lives,” and BY A THREAD’s “Last of the Daydreams”), DEVILLE have an extremely thick sound to them, akin to STRUNG OUT on “Twisted by Design,” which is fine by me. If you are in the hunting for some pretty strong melodic hardcore, you can’t really go wrong with DEVILLE.
