DAUGHTERS “Canada Songs”

Holy crap! It’s chaos…just sheer, utter chaos. “Canada Songs”, the debut full length of Providence-based DAUGHTERS, is the equivalent of a musical seizure. The songs are layered and, while possibly lacking technical merit, are compelling as hell. Quite simply, it’s a train wreck in every possible way, from inaudible lyrics to psychotic guitar arrangements, but I can’t seem to tear myself away from it. The ten tracks of fury are inevitably short, as is the trend with the grindcore/spazz style made popular by the likes of THE LOCUST. Once the opening track, “Fur Beach”, kicked into gear I was punched in the face and caught completely off guard by it. By the end of the final track, “The Ghost With the Most”, I was asking, “Is that it all there is?” When you get past the initial shock factor, you’ll realize that this is a great band that has come out with a great album, and it will leave you wanting more. Luckily, with such quick and disordered songs, the album has a solid amount of replay value. My advice: pick up the album and burn yourself a copy with every track on there twice. You probably won’t be able to recognize which song you already heard and you’ll feel like the disc is twice the length (ok, it was just a suggestion). “Canada Songs” is only about 15 minutes long, but it’ll be a 15 minutes that’ll get your adrenaline pumping. A must have for any fan of the genre.
