DAMONE “From The Attic”

It took me a few solid listens of “From the Attic” before I totally fell for it, but even after acknowledging that “I have better tastes than this,” I dig what DAMONE has to offer, and applaud RCA for going out on a limb and signing something with a good deal of guts. DAMONE are a four-piece rock band from Boston with a teenage female singer who I imagined grew up listening to a lot of DONNAS records. Although not entirely wrapped in that kind of playful atmosphere, vocalist “Noelle” has that innocent “see you after class” kinda of charm to her singing, even though she doesn’t always adhere to that role, as in the song, “Carwash Romance.” Taking the vocals out of the equation, the fellow three members provide a toothy backbone with powerful guitars and solid, but repetitive drumming. The few guitar solos that pierce the package are welcome cracks in the unwritten rule. As with any major label release, there’s always got to be that one track that stands out more than the rest, and I definitely think that goes to the third song, “Up to You,” which has a vocal hook to die far. I’d hate to give in to the powers that be in riding high on what is probably going to be the single, but “From the Attic” is worth it for that song alone. In any rate, DAMONE is quite cool and eons advanced past the sugary pop-rock of female artists presented in the mainstream.
