COUNTERFIT “Super Amusement Machine for Your Exciting Heart”

Calling a release “swell” probably regarded as a huge vote of confidence, but that’s the word I’m sticking with for COUNTERFIT. Swell. Although not entirely cognizant of what genre this band wants to stick with, or even float in and out of, “Super Amusement…” is a very able ten song collection of shifty tunes, chock full of unexpected timing changes, lively percussion, groovin’ guitars, and sly vocals. Most immediately, my thoughts of this band align with the group MOCK ORANGE, though certainly heavier in spots. Strong group vocals carry an ordinary hook into something easier to grasp onto, and the occasional foray into some deceptively quiet breaks bring an eerie element to this band. Crisp, but not overly clean recording gives COUNTERFIT plenty of room to breathe, though a little more power in the drums would probably bolster this band’s presence a bit. Personal, striking vocals linger through most of the songs, and I especially like the line to “Happy Endings” that goes, “The look – hips so sick and tired of trying so hard.” The chilliness of the first song, “Souvenir” really tends to set the tone for the rest of the release, so if you’re curious, I highly recommend that one. The layout, while not exactly complicated or even all that involved, stands out really well, and the brightness of colors and use of space really fits this band’s persona quite well. Good stuff.
