CAVE IN “Tides of Tomorrow EP”

In preparation of their upcoming full-length in early 2003 on RCA Records, CAVE IN has dropped this lovely six song EP (29 minutes, plus some videos too!) entitled “Tides of Tomorrow” to keep their fans happy while the waiting-game only gets tougher. Unfortunately, this EP will placate no one as chants of “More! More! More!” will emit from their brain almost instantaneously after getting through the first listen. All six tunes on here are entirely mesmorizing from start to finish, especially the first two tracks, “Come Into Your Own,” and the belovedly dreary, “Dark Driving.” It’s rare that a band has standout personnel in all areas, but every musical elements seems to try to out-enhance another. Stephen Brodsky’s vocals are more assertive and confident sounding than ever before, and John-Robert Conners’ flavorful percussion is worth the price of admission alone, especially at the climax of “Dark Driving,” which when paired with that haunting vocal finish is nothing short of stunning. The fifth tune, “The Callus” is a cover of a GIANTS CHAIR song, and while I have no idea who that band was/is, CAVE IN’s interpretation of that tune is simply marvelous, and probably heaviest material they’ve pushed out in a long time (and no, it’s not metal). CAVE IN is a band that demands the listener to pay attention to details and to appreciate their atmospheric achievements over any other perceived asset. Another great disc for the headphones.
