CAESURA “More Specific, Less Pacific”

Even before listening to this disc, I knew I was in for something cool since the artwork is very involved. CAESURA are on the heavier side of indie rock with a sound that bites a bit from AT THE DRIVE IN and FUGAZI with spastic vocals, chunky guitars, and a booming low-end sound. The drums and bass are the most prevalent in the recording and that gives “More Specific, Less Pacific” a very bombastic presence. With meandering guitars, jagged vocal interludes, and the occasional electronic flourish, CAESURA doesn’t package their music tightly at all – and I suppose they’re okay with that. There’s 15 tracks on here, at almost three-minutes each, which is somewhat long, but a few of them are just very short bits of noise, which I would have left out, as they disrupt a fairly groovin’ flow. Lyrically, I’m at a loss as the term “minimalist” doesn’t do the band justice. Hardly any of the songs go beyond a sentence or two of lyric, most of which is repeated throughout the duration of the song – clearly CAESURA appear to more inclined to focus on their musical notes rather than their penmanship. The AT THE DRIVE IN influence just doesn’t stop with the music style, as song titles like, “Enter, Fluorescence,” “Placebo Persuasion,” and “The Tunnel At The End of the Light” all seem a bit similar to avenues approached by the aforesaid band. In any case, “More Specific…” is a pretty rockin’ cd that serves as a nice genre buffer and display of musical talents.
