CADILLAC BLINDSIDE “The Allegory of Death and Fear EP”

These guys are easily one of the most underrated indie/emo/punk/whateverthefuckyouwantocall it bands out there. Simply put, they rock. No wait…THEY ROCK! Admittedly, they cop a lot of influences from contemporaries THE GET UP KIDS and AT THE DRIVE IN, but their multilayered songs really do speak on their own. Their debut disc came out in August of 2000 on the always cool Soda Jerk label, and Fueled By Ramen snatched them up as they saw great potential in this outfit. “The Allegory of Death and Fame” is a six song thriller that cuts at you like a mildly jagged butter knife. The music is smooth and satisfying, yet oddly jarring and painful. The vocals seem sometimes so scattered and off kilter you just want to straighten them out and make them more melodic and well, aurally pleasing. But that key point is what makes CADILLAC BLINDSIDE so appealing, you find yourself almost a part of the music. Fueled by Ramen was kind enough to put up an MP3 of the song “Empty Bottle Evening,” on their website, and I happen to like that tune the best of the six, however, they are all pretty good. Lyrically though, “Premeditated Redrum,” is unmatched compared to the other tunes. “Smiling, it hands her dead flowers,” is such a rad line. For those who are curious, the six songs are somewhat lengthy, and in total cover 20 minutes of music – a fine deal for an EP. The artwork and packaging are beautiful and only add to the sensual feeling that “The Allegory of Death and Fame” already promotes. Fueled by Ramen scored a bigtime win in landing these guys, hopefully we’ll see another full length fall from the skies in a very short period of time.
