BRACKET “Live in a Dive”

I’ve had a hard time liking BRACKET for many years. I’m not entirely sure on why this band doesn’t fall on my “good” side, especially because I definitely love a few of their songs, but listening to a “live” album didn’t get me very motivated. Hearing some of the old favorites, “Talk Show,” “Sour,” and “2RAK005″ had me breifly excited, but slogging through 17 songs of BRACKET is not something I’m going to be doing too much again in the near future. There’s something about their ultra-peppy pop-punk sound that drives me nuts – maybe it sounds too whiny, maybe the harmonies sound too fake, but whatever it is, I just can’t identify BRACKET’s style as something that would make me engaged in their work. As the second installment of Fat’s “Live in a Dive Series,” this one too features a full length comic book in the artwork, and sports some amazing recording qualities (due to the mobile 24 track studio). The crowd is barely audible in the mix, and typical of most live releases, the flow between songs doesn’t always match seamlessly. On a side note, the photo that makes up the artwork of the back of the tray card is extremely cool. I guess the bottom line with this is that if you dig BRACKET, this will please you greatly and if you don’t, well, I’m suprised you’ve read this far.
