BLUE SKIES FOR BLACK HEARTS “Love Is Not Enough”

Just a few months ago, BLUE SKIES FOR BLACK HEARTS released an album titled Turn The Light Out. However, after a major shift in the line-up that saw the departure of the band’s keyboardist (also the vocalist’s girlfriend) and drummer, vocalist Pat Kearns set out to write another album, the ten-track Love Is Not Enough. Perhaps inspired by the aforementioned events, the songs on Love Is Not Enough are quite heavy, emotionally speaking. Songs like the Rhodes-heavy “Here Comes The Rain,” the classic indie “You’re Like Lead,” and the folky “Love Is Not Enough” are all rather up-tempo affairs with lyrics that are nearly exclusively sorrowful. This trend continues for most of the album. Thankfully, Kearns emotion inspired a few really good songs such as the acoustic-led “With A Rubber Soul” and the stripped down “Otto.” As a whole, Love Is Not Enough is short enough at under thirty-minutes to withstand for a few listens, but, for this listener, it’s a bit of a haul to get through because it isn’t exactly full of rustling and bustling music. Kearns is a great songwriter as far as classically-influenced indie pop goes, and for that I’m willing to give BLUE SKIES FOR BLACK HEARTS positive marks.
