AS TALL AS LIONS “Lafcadio”

AS TALL AS LIONS sound like a band that’s worked tirelessly to perfect a distinctly UK indie rock sound with hints of mid 90s emo like MINERAL and THE PROMISE RING. Ruled rather by texture than force, “Lafcadio” is a release that swells with atmospheric inducement, and gentle, but soaring lead vocals (In the vein of MORRISSEY and COLDPLAY). An assortment of pianos, keyboards, and “orchestral percussion” compliment the band’s three guitars (though it’s not clear that all three are ever used at the same time), forging a very encompassing environment. Even though AS TALL AS LIONS are as far from a “power” group is at gets, they adeptly immerse the listener in a continuous flow of tones and melodies. Producer Sean O’Keefe lends his talents to this release, and thankfully, “Lafcadio” isn’t treated like another run-of-the-mill pop-punk band. On the other hand, as intricate, and meticulous as this disc is, it can also come off as bland and stagnant if one pays only minimal attention to it. Another less than flattering realization is that AS TALL AS LIONS reach the pinnacle of their songwriting on the first track, the catchy, “Break Blossom.” At almost 44 minutes in length, “Lafcadio,” after the first track can feel like a long dry spell. I give AS TALL AS LIONS much credit for writing such an expansive, heartfelt release, but in the end, it asks for more patience than I’m able to deliver.
