AGE OF RUIN “The Longest Winter Woes EP”

There is no doubt in my mind that if AGE OF RUIN had the ability to be a full-time touring band, they would clearly be a band on the tip of the tounge of hardcore and metal kids everywhere. Unlike so many contemporaries, and perhaps similar to UNEARTH, AGE OF RUIN really churn out a guitar sound that has pure momentum to it. While the oodles of “tech” metalcore bands try to impression the legions with how “extreme” they can be, most of those acts forget the very basic necessities of crafting interesting songs. Whereas most tech bands forsake empathy for sheer virtuoso, a band like AGE OF RUIN is equal part heart and talent. And when that’s not enough, AGE OF RUIN bring the fucking mosh. (see track two, “Two Silver Tongues”). Another highlight on here is the band’s re-recording the song “The Crimson Fails Forever” from their self-released full-length from a few years back. Sounding stronger than ever, this classic AGE OF RUIN song finally feels as powerful on disc as it does live. Dark, intricate lyrics fuel this band’s anguish, and although I’m personally a bit bored with talks of fallen angels and broken wings, at least AGE OF RUIN aren’t purile about their matters. “The Longest Winter Woes” was recorded by Ken Olden (BATTERY, DAMNATION AD), at his Monster Island Studio, and thankfully, it’s about time this band benefitted from having a huge, professional sound. With none of the six tracks (25 minutes) on here sounding remotely repetitive or stale, this EP is should be considered mandatory for fans of the band and the genre.
