ACROSS FIVE APRILS “A Tragedy In Progress”

This band features some of that older Eulogy Records style metalcore charm and attacks it with modern, chunky, but not overdone production qualities. ACROSS FIVE APRILS place a lot of diversity in sound among all 12 songs, switching up tempos constantly, and even throw in a totally non-suck acoustic (with sample overdubs) song that actually sounds creepy, to compliment the fiercely dark mood. Key to “A Tragedy In Progress” is that the band gets off to a good start with the first two songs, “The Helpless Dreams of An Assassin,” and “Pawn Shop Promises.” With creative drumming (plenty of double-bass to go around); a vocalist whose attempts at singing and screaming don’t cause birds to drop from the sky; and a lyrical pattern that’s lurid, but not ridiculous, ACROSS FIVE APRILS seem seriously intense rather than mockfully vindictive in the sound they carry. And of course, there’s no shortage of mosh parts. The seventh tune on here, “A Million Miles to Montreal” is the clear standout, and it’s just crushing – guaranteed to give your brain cells a workout. “A Tragedy In Progress” is hardly an original offering in terms of style, but the band makes up any lost ground through strong craftsmanship and an endearing, if not blunt sound quality. For fans of MOST PRECIOUS BLOOD, POISON THE WELL, and AGE OF RUIN.
