“The Other F Word” To Screen In November/December

From the inbox:

What happens when a generation’s ultimate anti-authoritarians – punk rockers – become society’s ultimate authorities – dads? “The Other F Word” is the revealing, funny, and touching film that tackles this question. With a large chorus of punk rock’s leading men – including Blink-182’s Mark Hoppus, Red Hot Chili Peppers’ Flea, and Rise Against’s Tim McIlrath – the documentary follows Jim Lindberg, a 20-year veteran of the skate punk band Pennywise, on his hysterical and moving journey from belting his band’s anthem “F—k Authority,” to embracing his ultimately authoritarian role in mid-life: fatherhood.

Director Andrea Blaugrund Nevins explains “When I was a kid growing up in New York City, Punk Rockers were the people you crossed the street to avoid. So when Cristan Reilly, the film’s producer, came to me with a book that her old friend, Jim Lindberg, the lead singer of the Southern California skate punk band Pennywise, had written about being a Punk Rock Dad, I was both repelled and intrigued.”

Producer Cristan Reilly adds, “Punk Rock Dad. It’s a great oxymoron. Andrea and I, who share, among many things, an ironic sense of humor, started with that very tiny but amusing kernel… We had no idea how much deeper the story would go, and we believe our film reflects the journey from funny concept to a series of moving realizations about rebellion, growing up, fathers, and fatherhood.”

Other dads featured in the film, which was Executive Produced by Morgan Spurlock & Jeremy Chilnick, include Art Alexakis (Everclear), Mark Mothersbaugh (Devo), Tony Adolescent (The Adolescents), Fat Mike (NOFX), Lars Frederiksen (Rancid), skater Tony Hawk, and many others.

“The Other F Word” screens first in New York and Los Angeles, then hits theaters across the country in November and December.

TIN HORN PRAYER’s “Get Busy Dying” Up For Free Download

Denver punk rock/Americana band TIN HORN PRAYER have their new full-length available for free streaming/download from several sources, including NoiseTrade and on their Bandcamp page. The band features former members of LOVE ME DESTROYER, THE BLACKOUT PACT, ONLY THUNDER, GHOST BUFFALO, PINHEAD CIRCUS, and more.

- NoiseTrade was a new site to me, looks pretty cool, but for it to compete with Bandcamp, it better have a streaming player soon…

Crankin’ nine minute EP of what the band terms “ambient gloom hardcore”. Can’t argue with that…

Paper + Plastick To Release 34 Song PLOW UNITED Retrospective! New Album In The Works Too!

From the inbox:

Philadelphia, PA – Paper + Plastick Records is proud to announce the release of influential pop-punk band PLOW UNITED’s collection Sleepwalk: A Restrospective. Available this weekend as a limited edition six panel CD at the inaugural East Coast edition of The Riot Fest, the retrospective will also be available as a double record with gatefold cover this October.

After a five-year run that came to an end in 1997, rumors of reunion shows and a new album circulated in the punk community, but were quickly dispelled by the band, who disbanded on friendly terms. The three band members last shared the stage in 1998, though there were many offers to play shows over the past thirteen years. Plow United bassist Joel Tannenbaum notes a few factors that lead to the band’s decision to reunite at Riot Fest East this weekend. “Everything fell into place – the show itself, the timing, [vocalist/guitarist] Brian [McGee] moving back to the mid-Atlantic and his solo career starting to take off, just everything,” he says, adding “And who in their right mind would say no to sharing a stage in Philly with the Descendants and X?”

The four-sided vinyl features the band’s three full-length releases, the self-titled debut (Creep, 1995), Goodnight Sellout (Creep, 1996), and the posthumous Narcolepsy (Creep, 1998). The D-side of the retrospective features songs from various compilations or singles the band released, including the unreleased instrumental “Monte.” Though rumors have swirled about for over a decade regarding new material, the band can finally confirm they are working on new music. “There will be another album,” admits Tannenbaum. “It’s about half written. I think that’s actually what the three of us are more psyched about than anything. Writing songs was always our favorite thing in the whole world.”

With a highly anticipated hometown show, and their first performance in over a decade, Plow United are excited to play to friends and fans, both old and new. “We know that there’s going to be a contingent of people at Riot Fest in front of the stage going totally wild,” comments Tannenbaum. “What we don’t know is how big that contingent will be. I think most of them have roots in PA, Delaware or Jersey, even if they don’t live there anymore. If the internet is anything to go by, quite a few people are flying in for the show.”

- Tremendously awesome news. There was a time in the mid/late 90s where whatever punk rock show I attended, there was at least one band on the bill that tried to copy PLOW UNITED’s impressively melodic but off-kilter sound. Although limited CD and vinyl releases sound like they are geared to the PU diehards, I’d recommend them to anyone that’s a fan of loud, brash, snotty pop-punk.

Richmond’s WINDHAND Prep Debut LP

From the inbox:

Richmond, VA may be known primarily for its wicked thrash and crust punk scenes, but there’s something evil lurking within that doomed old capital. Psyched-out, Electric Wizard-loving, ultra-Sabbathian amplifier worshippers WINDHAND, who boast ex-members of heavy riffters Facedowninshit and Alabama Thunderpussy within their ranks, have risen. On the heels of a recent Northeast tour and numerous triumphant local appearances, WINDHAND will be releasing their self-titled debut LP via Richmond’s own Forcefield Records. Slated for an October 25th release, the record will be available in a limited gatefold pressing of violet wax, and was recorded/mixed by Garrett Morris (PARASYTIC, BASTARD SAPLING) at the Dark Room with Slipped Disc Audio’s Bill McElroy (PENTAGRAM, AVAIL, ALABAMA THUNDERPUSSY) handling mastering duties.
