Song of the Day: BASEMENT – “Canada Square”

- Huge SUNNY DAY REAL ESTATE influence on this song. I love every second of it…

Three Reviews: HEARTSOUNDS, THE TURBO ACs, HANDGUNS

HEARTSOUNDS – Drifter (Epitaph): Oh hell yes. Teenage me is leaping out of my skin while listening to Drifter, feeling that oh-so-awesome rush of adrenaline that smacks of the first time I played STRUNG OUT’s Another Day In Paradise. HEARTSOUNDS’ second full-length is a blistering mash of breakneck melodicore with dual male and female vocals. The smoothness of the band’s songwriting, plus the top-notch Castle Ultimate recording has HEARTSOUNDS operating with the deft grace of a jumbo jet nailing a perfect landing. Forceful forbidden-beat drumming, and a killer guest vocal spot by Jason Cruz (perfecting an influence!) round out the highlights, and my only quibble is that the lead vocals occasionally get overshadowed by the crankin’ rhythm section (the backing ooohs-and-ahhs are simply heavenly however). The slower, ballad-like “Echo” isn’t the band’s best outfit, but it’s an effective pause before the final three songs blow on through. Is it too early to teach my 3 year old how to skate to this?

THE TURBO A.C.’S – Kill Everyone (Stomp): I let out a bit of a laugh when Kill Everyone arrived a few weeks ago – THE TURBO A.C.’s were still around?!? With a career that’s gone through several twists and turns, including stints in Blackout Records and Nitro (Fuel for Life came out more than 10 years ago…), the reformulated garage/bar punk band is back with another grizzled attack. Age hasn’t exactly hurt the group; I’m getting less Detroit rock in their sound hearing something with extra bit and style – THE EXPLOSION and THE BRONX aren’t bad references, though the origin of the THE TURBO ACs predates both of those bands by more than half a decade, if not much longer. Maybe I hear some ZEKE in here too? There’s a dark countrified element, for sure. I dunno – a fun listen, and punk rock that’s got a timeless vibe.

HANDGUNS – Don’t Bite Your Tongue (Pure Noise): The fellas in HANDGUNS are about half the age of the veterans piloting THE TURBO A.C.’s, and it shows on Don’t Bite Your Tongue,  a very green, friends/love/life-themed seven song release. The energy-filled pop-punk/melodic hardcore band slides into position next to early SET YOUR GOALS and THE MOVIELIFE, but lacks the sting in the melodies to truly draw in the listener. With little tempo variation, several of the songs on Don’t Bite blend into one another, and the vocals, overplay excitement, almost to a fault. These guys seem to have their hearts and heads in a good place, but I energy alone can’t overcome average songwriting.

NIGHTLIGHTS Streaming New Full-Length; Tour Dates

Daytona Beach, Florida melodic punk rock band NIGHTLIGHTS have their Eulogy Recordings debut full-length, So It Goes, streaming on the band’s Punknews.org profile. The band features former members of NO HARM DONE (Think Fast!) and brings to the table a gruffer sound not unlike LATTERMAN or MAKE DO AND MEND. The band left on a three week tour starting yesterday, the rest of the dates are after the jump.

- Way, waaaaaaay better than their 2010 EP Long Way Home. Not an original sound by any means, but kind of hard to not appreciate the songs nonetheless…

HOSTAGE CALM “Single Series” Streaming/Download on Bandcamp

HOSTAGE CALM has their brand new two song entry in the Run For Cover Records singles series streaming and available for download on their Bandcamp page. The two new songs are “War On A Feeling” and “Donna Lee”.

THE MIGHTY FINE’s “In Revival” Pre-Order Launched

From the inbox:

In Revival, the sophomore full-length from THE MIGHTY FINE (San Luis Obispo, CA), is now available for pre-order from Solidarity Recordings (imadethismistake, The Methadones, Run, Forever). The album will see an official street date of August 16th on CD format, while a 12″ vinyl version will be pressed in the Fall.

To celebrate the pre-order, The Mighty Fine is giving away two brand new songs for free. To download mp3s for the tracks “Paper Trails” and “To Indiana,” go here.

Produced by Nolan Perry, mastered by Justin Perkins (Screeching Weasel, The Riverdales, Direct Hit!) and featuring artwork from Dave Watt, In Revival is the follow-up to The Might Fine’s 2010 self-released full-length, Bad Timing For Everything. On its latest stellar effort, the California trio extolls the most positive virtues of contemporaries such as The Menzingers and Against Me! – driving, punchy rhythms, soaring choruses and dynamic song structures – while still carving out a unique space for itself within the crowded punk universe. Played with passion and a fiery conviction, but also executed with precision and carefully considered ideas, In Revival bares the mark of a band ready for bigger and better things.

- The download files are in huge .WAV format. If you’re interested in streaming the two songs (and I’d encourage that!), you can stream both new songs on the band’s Facebook page.

- Great record, but it’s no “Fate’s Got A Driver”. Cool to see CHAMBERLAIN resurface more than marginally all these years later.

Grave Mistake Launches Bandcamp Page

From the inbox:

That’s right, we finally got around to getting the Grave Mistake Bandcamp page up and running! The label really hasn’t had had a steady spot for streaming music for a while, so this time around we decided to go all out. There are currently 30 Grave Mistake releases streaming in their entirety … all recent releases from the past few years, along with a good chunk of the back catalog. It will also be a place to get some sneak peaks of upcoming releases! Many thanks to GM shitworker / Employee of the Month Sykes for putting the page together!

The main purpose for the Bandcamp was obviously for people to check out new bands or listen to their favorites in a convenient place, but of course I wouldn’t object if you wanted to purchase some of the mp3s or even pick up the actual records in the webstore :)

- Things in this presser that we like: (1) Grave Mistake Records; (2) Bandcamp. Whooo! To get the streaming party started, here’s a personal favorite, TIME TO ESCAPE’s “S/T” EP
