Stream/Download: TRUTH – 2011 Demo

Fort Worth, Texas straight-edge hardcore band TRUTH have a new demo out featuring seven songs including a cover of BOLD’s “Nailed to the X”. The band is heavily influenced by early youth-crew material, not a lick of metal to be found on here…

Two Sorta-Quick Reviews – FACE TO FACE and LIVING WITH LIONS

FACE TO FACE – Laugh Now… Laugh Later (People Like You): When FACE TO FACE departed from the scene several years ago, it didn’t seem like a fitting finish to a band that was a punk rock staple for the 90s and early 2000s. I guess they felt that their itch hadn’t totally been scratched either as an entirely new full-length has the band in fine late-career form. Stylistically on par with 2002′s How To Ruin Everything and their Fat Wreck classic Don’t Turn Away, the eleven song release kicks up melodic punk rock dirt in typical mid-to-fast tempo form. Sing-alongs sprout like weeds and “Bombs Away” is pushed hard by some of the band’s best darker material in ages (ominous whooooooo-oh-ohhhhhhhs included). FACE TO FACE established their timeless reputation many full-lengths ago, an element that survived several stylistic shifts, and Laugh Now is 100% comfort zone material for any fan the band gained along the away.

LIVING WITH LIONS – Holy Shit (Adeline): I’m not sure it was wise for LIVING WITH LIONS to title their album with something that was bound to draw attention away from their own music, but hey, at least people are talking about it  right? The trouble I have with it (and it’s only a crumb of trouble) is that a title like this is something I’d expect from THE QUEERS or a band with a history of being less than serious in their lyrics and image. Admittedly, the extensive artwork supporting the title ‘concept’ is worth more than a few chuckles. Hopefully they won’t come out of the experience as LIVING WITH REGRETS (groan). Anyway, Holy Shit, the band’s second full-length is a milemarker in the group’s evolution of building upon technical, speedy pop-punk and digging in with some swelling, gut-busting post-hardcore. The band toured last fall with MAKE DO AND MEND and I have to wonder how much of that band’s influence rubbed on the ‘LIONS, as it looms large on several songs. This is a huge plus as the vocals have the depth and range to command emotions that deliver a heftier impact outside of quick-footed realms of the band’s earlier material (fret not, there’s some still forbidden-beat goodness). I think I’ll playing this one a whole lot in the coming months.
