MY AMERICAN HEART "Hiding Inside The Horrible Weather" (Warcon Ent)
Review by Corey Schmidt

The Meaning In Makeup, MY AMERICAN HEART's last attempt at a record, was an abomination. Even though the band's emotional rock approach was fairly straightforward, the lyrics pretty much killed any chance for the band to write something successful. Back then, the band's average age still hovered around seventeen, and now, a few years older, the band has progressed a bit on Hiding Inside The Horrible Weather. The album's eleven songs are varied enough to warrant a complete listen this time around. The songs have an attitude and thus carry themselves a bit better than last time. Opener "Boys! Grab Your Guns" is a catchy rock track driven with powerful guitar leads and the still boyish vocals of Larry Soliman. Despite the young vocals, the sexy attitude of it makes me think it would have been the perfect soundtrack to ottomon humping had a bunch of white boys came up with the idea first. Scattered between songs just like "Boys!" (or, oddly enough, straight-up catchy pop tunes like "Moving On") are a few slower tunes, most notably the moody, acoustically-driven "Tired And Uninspired." All in all, though, a majority of Horrible Weather finds MY AMERICAN HEART utilizing shtick after shtick. If these guys get a bit of a creative backbone, they could surely write an album worth repeated listens, but for now, they're still caught up in so many different sounds its obvious they'll stay on the ship even in the midst of the most horrible weather.
