SAID AND DONE "Everyday" (Shield Recordings) Review by Jordan A. Baker
The Netherlands' Shield Recordings are only a mere nine releases into their existence, but they've already become a markedly reliable hardcore label. Their latest item comes from SAID AND DONE, a band thoroughly reared on crunchy, thrashin' NYHC. Aggressive without being cartoonish, and quick on its feet, SAID AND DONE's Everyday does its business in 25 minutes and moves right along. SAID AND DONE's stand-out characteristic is borne from the shouted lead vocals which manage to be surprisingly melodic and flexible, not unlike MAXIMUM PENALTY, minus the awkward "grooving." This works best on the fifth track "Overcome," which is one of the album's mid-paced offerings. The song churns up and down while vocalist "Pim" leads a mighty sing-along between badass two-step dance parts. A mildly murky recording quality gives Everyday somewhat of a live feel, mostly because the guitars are mixed upfront and tend the bury the drums, but I'd take this kind of blunted sound anyday over something that comes off with less heart. SAID AND DONE might not have much of an original sound, but their songwriting is exceptionally strong and Everyday never misses a beat. Solidly recommended.
